The Ancient Art of Living

Yoga is a discipline that embraces a mix of spiritual, mental and physical practices. Its origin can be traced to India. It is estimated that the practice has been around for nearly 5,000 years but with no confirmed record of its founder. However, it is believed that the practice of yoga originated with the pre-Vedic Indian culture that existed around the 6th and 5th centuries BCE.

What Is Yoga?

Yoga has different definitions based on various perceptions that people or societies have about the practice. Some think of it as a religion other consider it a cult, and those that fully embrace the practice view it a lifestyle.

Yoga is an art of living. For the more ardent followers, it is a practice that has different schools and objectives across various practices that encompass Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism, among others yet is it not limited to any specific religion. Yoga involves different breathing practices, poses, meditation, and imagery.

The term yoga means a union of consciousness between man and the universe; a bond of man’s soul with the universal spirit. For some people, yoga is a lifestyle practice that majors on physical exercises and health. However, the deeper elements (in each practice or path of yoga) bring out the infinite potential of man, from his mind, body, and soul. Another version defines term it as a lifestyle practice whose processes focus on reversing the outward flow of consciousness and energy to allow the mind to have a better perception of things. In so doing, a person attains a deeper sense while experiencing and appreciating truth in all its diversities.

What Yoga Focuses On

According to the physical and spiritual nature of man, energies, and awareness flow outwardly towards the world as experienced through our five senses. The five senses are tasked with the duty of supplying man with the information he needs thus his reasoning centers around his senses. Yoga is just but an avenue through which man can tap deeper into various subtle awareness levels and be able to find solutions to various enigmas of life.

Yoga is a tool that we can use to know who we are, our purpose for living, and how to realize the truth. By practicing yoga, a person can develop and master the purpose and use of all the five sense, find solutions to various health problems, and attain a high level or realization that transcends the physical and mental state of man.
